Format OS Version Number of Huawei Switch Product

This article will explain the format of OS Version Number that Huawei uses within their product.

The OS version number format of Huawei products is similar.
The product name (or model) is followed by:

VxxxRxxxCxxSPC/SPH/CP/HPxxx

For example:

  • OptiX OSN 1800 V100R019C10SPC700
  • iMaster NCE-T V100R020C10SPC300

Here is the explanation about the OS version number format.

Vxxx

V is referred to as the platform version. Vxxx refers to the software or hardware platform on which a product is based. It is also called the V version number, which indicates the change of the main product platform. xxx is numbered from 100. 

It’s like the structure and building materials of our house. If the platform version of the thatched house is V100, then The brick and tile structure is V200, and the reinforced concrete structure of the high-rise is V300.

Rxxx

R is for the release. Rxxx refers to a set of features and functions of products released by commercial institutions to the market. xxx is numbered from 001.

For example, we can only eat in our R001 house, but we also can drink in the house in R002. Even in the house R003 we also can have dessert.

Cxx

C indicates the Customer. Cxx is the customized version developed based on the R version that quickly meets customer specific requirements. Cxx is numbered from C00.

It’s like living appliances we want to use at home, C00 stands for wood furniture, C10 stands for electrical furniture, and C20 stands for smart furniture, etc.

Types of Patches

Patches are classified into HP(Hot Patches) and CP(Cold Patches) based on the impact of patch activation and taking effect on service experience. Installing the HP on the product does not interrupt services (doesn’t need reboot device system), but installing the CP on the product interrupts services (need reboot device system).

Patches are classified into emergency patches and incremental patches based on the release period and number of fixed bugs. An emergency patch is used to fix a few defects that need immediately. Incremental patching is used to fix multiple accumulated defects before. such as Cold Service Pack (SPC) and Hot Service Pack (SPH).

Emergency cold patch: CPxxxx
Incremental hot patch: SPHxxx
Incremental cold patch: SPCxxx
